IE hack in the wild

Posted by Mark on January 18th, 2010

As you may know, the continued prevalence of Internet Explorer 6 is a constant thorn in the side of many a web developer – why? Because compared to newer browsers, such as newer versions of Firefox, Chrome, Safari and indeed Internet Explorer (there are others, but these are common), it’s just broken. To fully target IE 6, we have to spend time, and clients money coding a scaled back, weaker, less sophisticated version of the site.

This, the more informed web user will already know, but I take this opportunity to give users of the aforesaid long-in-the-tooth browser even more reason to cease using it.

From our favourite news site: Exploit code for potent IE zero-day bug goes wild

This article outlines the existence of yet another IE vulnerability, that can hack systems containing IE 6, and IE 7, and it can crash IE 8. I’m sure that there will be quick fixes and workarounds available for IE 7, and IE 8, but will Microsoft put out an update for IE 6, which is a system that they haven’t supported for years?

I’d suggest that Internet users just upgrade now, with a money is no object frame of mind. What price can we put on safety? But given that most alternative browsers are free, even money shouldn’t be an issue.

Boho Weddings and Events Launched

This week we launched Boho Weddings and Events, a web site for a local Wedding and Event Planner. The site can be seen at http://www.bohoweddingsandevents.com.

This project was highly client-led, and Kelly has received a web design that’s exactly what she wanted. The logo and website design was produced by Nigel Houghton at Nhgrafiks (http://www.nhgrafiks.co.uk).

The website works on all newer browsers, and is usable on Internet explorer 6 despite us scaling back on visual effects due to the weakness of this old browser.

I’ll once again take the opportunity to point out that people using Internet Explorer 6 (or earlier) should get their hands on a newer, more capable web browser, there are plenty around, and they won’t regret it!

Wizzy take on SEO for Doors and Floors Galore with immediate success

Posted by Mark on October 28th, 2009

Wizzy Design is now doing the SEO work for Doors and Floors Galore. Doors and Floors Galore import and stock many types of Doors including Interior Doors, Exterior Doors, Oak Doors, French Doors and Patio Doors. They also have a page listing their New Editions.

We have suggested several alterations be made to the site, and have had immediate success with their Fire Doors section. Effectively we’re targeting the terms “Fire Doors” and “Glazed Fire Doors” for them, and one of the first jobs was to label each fire door with the term “Fire Door”, which was simple enough. A week later we were informed by the client that we’d achieved a page 1 result for it, nice! We hadn’t really started with the SEO yet!

It’s too early to tell what the level of success of our first work proposal is, but I’ll publish all successes and surprises here. Certainly we expect to secure some good results for Doors and Floors.

PS) Don’t forget to read about our Digital Marketing and Zenith SEO Service.

Enhancements to Apex CMS Reports Generator

Posted by Darren on October 5th, 2009

Two small enhancements were made to the report generator:

  • Spreadsheet style reports (downloadable CSV files) can be downloaded without viewing the on-screen report first, which could take some time for large or complex reports.
  • Preparation time for large on-screen reports has been significantly reduced, with the start of the report being viewable while the rest is being generated.
